"Kewarabi Shrine" is dedicated to the couple Sugurimiyamori and Kotojime.

During the Konin period (810-824), Sugurimiyamori was forced to move to Oita Prefecture from present-day Kyoto Prefecture, where the central government was located, due to a plot by his political enemies.
Sugurimiyamori left his wife, Kotojime, in Kyoto and went to Oita.
One of the pleasures of the lonely Sugurimiyamori was to gaze at the Mikaduki pond at Mikaduki Shrine.
Kotojime then fled Kyoto and arrived in Oita, where he was reunited with Sugurimiyamori.
Sugurimiyamori, with the support of his wife Kotojime, was able to carry out good governance in Oita.

The image below shows Mikaduki Shrine and Mikaduki pond as viewed by Sugurimiyamori.
